Sepang is back on the Formula 1 calendar in one of the strangest—and most travel-worthy—changes of the 2026 season. Formula 1 and the FIA announced that Sepang International Circuit will host the Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia from October 2–4, 2026.
For travelers, the unusual event name matters less than the opportunity: one of F1's classic modern circuits is back, Kuala Lumpur is an excellent food-and-nightlife city, and the trip can be extended into a wider Malaysia vacation.

Where to stay
Kuala Lumpur City Centre / Bukit Bintang
Best for most groups. You get restaurants, malls, bars, and a real city-break experience. The cost is a longer circuit commute.
Near KL Sentral
A useful transport-focused base with strong rail connectivity around Kuala Lumpur and toward the airport corridor.
Sepang / airport hotels
Best if the group wants to minimize race-day travel and does not care about nightlife. This can work well for a short race-only trip, but it sacrifices the reason to spend evenings in Kuala Lumpur.
The circuit commute is the main planning problem
Sepang is near Kuala Lumpur International Airport rather than downtown Kuala Lumpur. That means a hotel in the most enjoyable part of the city is not necessarily a hotel close to the track.
Once official race-week transport guidance is published, compare special shuttles, rail-plus-shuttle combinations, private transfers, and driving. For a larger group, a pre-booked vehicle can become competitive with multiple individual rides—but only if the drop-off plan is clear.
Do not assume a normal airport-to-city travel time will apply immediately before or after Formula 1 sessions.
A five-night Malaysia F1 itinerary
Thursday: Arrive in Kuala Lumpur, check in around KLCC or Bukit Bintang, and make the first night about food rather than sightseeing.
Friday: Practice at Sepang. Use the day to test the group transport plan before Sunday crowds.
Saturday: Qualifying, then dinner back in Kuala Lumpur. Keep the reservation late enough to account for circuit exit traffic.
Sunday: Race day. Leave with a large buffer and make Sepang the only fixed event until evening.
Monday: Batu Caves, neighborhoods and food markets, or a slower hotel day before departures.
Extension: Add Penang, Langkawi, or another Southeast Asian stop if the long-haul flight justifies a bigger trip.
Why this is a high-upside group trip
Because the event was added late, some travelers may overlook it compared with Singapore one week later. That can make Sepang particularly interesting for groups that want an F1 trip with a broader destination component.
It is also a natural comparison with Singapore: the races are consecutive weekends and geographically close enough that serious fans may consider combining them into one Southeast Asia trip.
