Italian Grand Prix 2026 Travel Guide: Monza & Milan

Italian Grand Prix · Monza / Milan, Italy

The Italian Grand Prix is the classic European F1 pilgrimage: Monza's high-speed circuit, Ferrari-red grandstands, and Milan close enough to turn the race into a proper city weekend. In 2026, the race weekend runs September 4–6.

For a group, the key decision is simple: stay in Milan for the full trip experience or stay closer to Monza for easier race mornings.

Quick trip facts

Where to stay

Central Milan

Best for groups that want restaurants, bars, sightseeing, and flexibility after the track. Stay around Brera, Porta Garibaldi, Centrale, or the historic center depending on budget. You will have a longer race-day commute, but the rest of the weekend is much better.

Monza

The practical choice if the race is the overwhelming priority. You reduce the early-morning transport burden but give up some of Milan's evening energy and hotel inventory can tighten quickly.

Near Milano Centrale

A useful compromise for groups focused on rail access. It is less atmospheric than Brera, but early starts are easier and airport connections are straightforward.

Getting to Monza on race weekend

Do not treat Monza like a normal drive to a stadium. Large crowds, temporary traffic plans, shuttles, and walking sections mean the final miles take time.

The usual group strategy is to use rail from Milan toward Monza and follow official event transport instructions from the station area. Exact special trains, shuttle routes, entrances, and pedestrian plans can change by year, so check the promoter's current race-week transport guide before you leave the hotel.

Build more buffer than you think you need. On Sunday, make the circuit the only hard commitment before the race.

A simple group itinerary

Thursday: Arrive in Milan, check in, aperitivo, early dinner.

Friday: Head to Monza for practice, then return to Milan for dinner. If only part of the group wants Friday at the track, the others can spend the day around the Duomo, Brera, or Navigli.

Saturday: Qualifying day. Keep dinner flexible because exiting the circuit can take longer than expected.

Sunday: Race day. Leave early, carry only what the circuit permits, and plan a celebratory dinner in Milan rather than trying to squeeze another activity into the afternoon.

Monday: Extend to Lake Como, Venice, Florence, or another Italian stop if the group has time.

Why Monza works for groups

Monza solves a common event-trip problem: the race is serious enough for hardcore fans, while Milan gives everyone else a reason to come. A mixed-interest group can split for practice sessions and reconvene at night without the whole weekend revolving around the circuit.

It is also easy to turn the trip into a larger vacation. For international groups, adding two or three nights elsewhere in Italy can make the long-haul flight feel much more worthwhile.

If Monza is too soon or the group wants a different vibe, compare it with the new Madrid Grand Prix, Singapore's night race, or Austin.
