Staying near the track in the Old Louisville / South Louisville area minimizes race-day transport, though options are more limited and the neighborhood is quieter than downtown. Good if track proximity on the big day is your priority.
The wider region (and bourbon country)
When Louisville itself is full or overpriced, nearby areas and even a base out toward Kentucky's bourbon country (for a trip that pairs the Derby with distillery visits) are worth considering, with a drive into the city.
