Oktoberfest is almost designed for a group trip—until ten people try to find one another inside the world's largest folk festival without a table plan. Munich's official 2026 Oktoberfest runs September 19 through October 4 at the Theresienwiese.
The trip works best when you plan the festival as an anchor, not as a 16-day excuse to spend every waking hour in a tent. Build Munich around one or two serious Wiesn days, then give the group room for restaurants, sightseeing, and recovery.

Where to stay
Ludwigsvorstadt / Isarvorstadt
The most practical Oktoberfest base. You can stay close enough to walk to the Theresienwiese while still having restaurants and nightlife outside the grounds. Expect strong demand and premium rates.
Altstadt / city center
Best for first-time Munich visitors who want landmarks and walkability as well as the festival. The Wiesn is still easy to reach by transit or on foot depending on the hotel.
Maxvorstadt
A strong compromise with restaurants, museums, bars, and access to central Munich. Good if the group wants a real city trip rather than sleeping beside the festival.
Haidhausen
More neighborhood atmosphere and often calmer at night, with strong transit connections toward the center.
The table reservation problem
Large tents can fill, especially evenings and weekends. Official tent reservation systems vary by tent, and there is no single universal reservation portal for every seat.
For a large group:
- pick the day and approximate session first
- choose two or three acceptable tents
- use the official tent reservation channel
- understand minimum food/drink voucher requirements
- put the exact tent, entrance, reservation name, and meeting point in the shared itinerary
Do not buy questionable “guaranteed table” offers from random resellers without verifying legitimacy.
You can attend without a reservation
Reservations are not required just to enter Oktoberfest, and portions of tent seating are available without reservations. But a large group arriving at peak time has a very different problem from two people arriving early.
If you do not have a table, make early arrival part of the plan and accept that the group may need to split temporarily.
A four-night Oktoberfest itinerary
Thursday or Friday: Arrive, check in, Bavarian dinner away from the festival, early night.
First Wiesn day: Go earlier, learn the grounds, rides, food stalls, and one or two tents. This does not need to be the huge night.
Munich day: Marienplatz, Englischer Garten, museums, beer gardens, or a day trip if the group wants a break.
Main Oktoberfest day: Use the table reservation if you have one and keep everything else flexible.
Departure day: Late breakfast and avoid the cruel 7 a.m. flight if possible.
Dress: traditional, not costume-store parody
Many visitors wear Bavarian traditional clothing, especially lederhosen and dirndls. If your group wants to participate, buy or rent appropriate clothing rather than treating it as a novelty costume. Nobody needs traditional dress to attend.
Group-budget rule
Separate the shared costs—hotel, reservation deposits or vouchers, airport transfer—from personal festival spending. That prevents the organizer from tracking every beer, ride, pretzel, and late-night taxi.

Oktoberfest pairs naturally with Salzburg, the Bavarian Alps, Vienna, Prague, or northern Italy. If international flights are expensive, adding a few post-festival nights can make the trip feel far more worthwhile.
